Musings of the Editor

A Tarn’s Eye View

Tal! Welcome to the September, 2006 edition, which is Volume IX Issue 3, and is the 99th issue of The Gorean Voice.

We continue to be pleased at the response to the email notification system that we put in place last year! For those of you just discovering The Gorean Voice, you can receive an email when each issue of The Gorean Voice is available for viewing, so if you have not already done so, please sign up! As always, your confidentiality is honored when you sign up.

We wish to remind readers wishing to reprint our articles that, as the Guidelines state, copyright is retained by the individual authors. Any requests to reprint sent to the editor will be forwarded to the author - or, if the author has provided a contact address in the article, the author can be contacted directly. One advantage of requesting permission is to then be able to honestly use the phrase, after giving the author proper credit for the authorship, “Reprinted with permission.” We would also appreciate the additional acknowledgment, “This article first appeared in The Gorean Voice.”

Se'Kara Edition

This is the Se'Kara edition, as the autumnal equinox occurs this month! If you do not have a fall celebration planned, you might wish to consult:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autumnal_equinox
for the science background and then:
http://www.religioustolerance.org/fall_equinox.htm
or
http://www.holidayinsights.com/other/fall.htm
for traditional celebration information.

An additional bit of information for those whose fall festivals include harvest festivals: As everyone knows, on August 24, 2006, the International Astronomical Union formally defined “planet.” In doing so, it exhibited the art of compromise and created two new categories of celestial object: the “classical planet” and the “dwarf planet.” Pluto got officially designated as a dwarf planet while the famous eight got designated as classical planets.
The announcement is found at:
http://www.iau2006.org/mirror/www.iau.org/iau0602/index.html
while a popular site summarizing the application of this event is found
(at the moment) at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dwarf_planet#List_of_dwarf_planets.
Interestingly, the until-now asteroid Ceres, and the Trans-Neptunian Object popularly known as Xena, were then upgraded to dwarf planet status as well. So, this Se'Kara will be held under a sky in which there are now eight classical planets and three (so far) dwarf planets, one of which is Ceres, named for the Roman goddess of grains, plants in general, and maternal love. This harvest season, we count a world known as Ceres as one of this solar system’s dwarf planets.

However you choose to observe Se'Kara,
may your celebrations be happy ones!

Special Call for Contributors

A number of our contributors have suffered serious health problems. The editorial staff is deeply concerned about the current size of The Gorean Voice issues, as we wish to bring many quality offerings each month to our readership. We therefore urge readers who have considered contributing to contact me.

In this Issue

Great news! We are extrmely please to announce that ... drumroll ... Mastiff clash of cymbols ... is back with us in the Humor department! In preparation of the new material that he will bring us beginning with the October issue, we are letting our newer readership get a sneak preview, complete with retro banner, in order to become acquainted with him by recalling some of the Classics by Mastiff!

We also welcome a new contributor to the Philosophy department: Jason, who offers an optimistic view of the future regarding What Women Really Want and the Fad of Feminism.

In the Art department, Vanion reminds us that in the background ... or the foreground ... there is always the Threat of Restraint.

In the Booknotes department, Socrates covers chapters that chronicle Tiffany’s escape and flight to save her life while being tracked with a price on her head. She goes from being a proxy-Tatrix to a kajira who must learn slavery “from the ground up.”

The Geography department puts its foot into the waters of The Tamber Gulf.

The Reviews department takes a look at the HBO series, Deadwood!

The Poetry department offers perspectives on Digital Citizenship, on the power of words in She Posed Nude, and on the threat of censorship in The Net is Cast Broadly.

prism is back in the Crossroads department with Thoughts while Away.

This just in from Mishel and the Crossword Puzzles department: “Tal and Kind Greetings! Wow, we are moving quickly. Here we are at the end of Blood Brothers of Gor, Chapters 33-56. In this month’s crossword, we learn who wins the battle between the Kaiila and those dangerous Yellow Knives and watch Cuwignaka truly become a man. Miss Iwoso gets her comuppence and Hci gets his brother back. Three men become true blood brothers and slaves are exchanged to their rightful places. Tarl meets once again with Zarendarger who finally returns to the steel world. And you can solve this month’s jigsaw of only 208 pieces! It has truly been an amazing journey into the red savages world but I am looking forward to starting into Kajira of Gor next month. I hope you are, too. As always, I thank you humbly for your continuing support.

Beginning next month, we will have a Character department that will provide in-depth studies of characters from the Books!

Possibilities for Contributors

There are many possibilities for contributors. If any of these departments appeals to you as a place where you might find a writing or other artistic niche, and of course, if you have ideas for a new feature and are willing to help, then read the guidelines for authors and let us know! Although some possibilities are more appropriate for one person to manage over time, many departments benefit from many contributors. Even if you are thinking about contributing only once, say, through Gorean humor or a book review or perhaps a poem, you should still contact me.
