Tarot readings are arrangements of cards drawn from a shuffled deck. The layout of the cards is known as a spread and, in addition to the individual meaning behind and in the imagery of each card, determines what each card refers to as to its meaning.

Each tarot deck is made up of seventy-eight cards, twenty-two are grouped into and known as the Major Arcana while the remaining fifty-six cards are grouped into four suits of fourteen cards each and known as the Minor Arcana. The suits are called most commonly Swords, Cups, Wands and Pentacles. Wands can also be known as Staves or Rods while Pentacles can also be known or called as Coins or Discs.

The four suits correspond traditionally to the four main elements of existence with:

  • swords symbolic of fire from the direction of south,
  • cups symbolic of water from the direction of west,
  • wands symbolic of air from the direction of east, and
  • pentacles symbolic of earth from the direction of north.

Although the traditional meanings of the cards are the same regardless of the specific deck used, the imagery and language associated with each deck tends to make it particularly useful for particular types of readings.
