Rune readings are arrangements of the 24 letters, or runes, of the old Futhark alphabet. The layout of the runes is known as a spread and determines what each rune refers to.

In addition to each rune having an individual meaning revealed by the rune or symbol or letter carved onto it and the meaning it reveals further by its position in the reading spread, what the set of runes is made of and thus is used for also helps to determine their meanings. Most rune throwers or readers commonly use sets of runes made of ceramic, wood or stone but

• sets of gold can be used for matters of business or career,
• sets of jade runes can be used for questions about love or relationships,
• sets of ice or crystal runes for matters of struggle or conflict, and
• spirit runes for questions about spirituality.
