Greetings kajira{Generic},

This one refused to tell a man some personal information about herself and he said she was not a slave. He told her that if she was truly a slave she would give out the information, with no questions asked. This girl is upset and confused because she feels she is a slave, and does not think refusing to give out personal details makes her defiant, only cautious. So, here is the question: What should a girl do if she is asked for information she does not feel comfortable giving out?

Dear hoping,

It is this girl’s opinion that you are not a failure for protecting yourself. Perhaps you might have been too aggressive in your refusal and that might have offended the man, but in any case the bottom line is that you have to protect yourself. You might, in case something like this happens again, try to approach your refusal from a more conciliatory angle by begging to explain why it is you are uncomfortable. Still, foremost in your mind needs to be your safety, and most of the men this girl has come across understand that. You could always ask a man you know reasonably well if he would intercede for you, should another man insist he needs information you do not feel okay about divulging.
