A fair and beautiful girls father is in debt to an unscrupulous merchant. If the father cannot pay the debt he will go to prison. The unscrupulous merchant who is owed the money tells the father he has a solution.
If the father gives him his daughter as slave he will write off the debt.
The merchant is quite a clever trickster and also has a reputation for cruelty, so the girl is not eager to be enslaved. The unscrupulous man says they should let fate decide. They are stand on a pebble strewn path.
The merchant says he will put a black pebble and a white pebble in a bag. If the girl picks out a white pebble her fathers debt will be paid off and she is free to go. If she pulls out a black pebble she must be enslaved to the merchant, but her fathers debt will still be paid.
now here is the crunch
The girl watches the merchant carefully, and sees that by sleight of hand he picks up two black pebbles and put them in the bag. If she complains he will just have her father thrown in prison anyway, what should she do?
There is a simple solution but what is it?
