berkana rune What may be seen or learned from the left rune representing an important element of the past:

Berkana represents the birch tree and is symbolic of renewal, rebirth, birth, growth and fertility. This rune is one of happiness and joy, representing good outcomes from undertaken ventures. It is the rune of family and a good household.

 

thurisaz rune

What may be seen or learned from the center rune representing a deciding element of the present:

Thurisaz is the symbol of the thorn representing barriers and senseless violence. In this reading though the thorn is reversed. This could mean that barriers will not hold or that pointless violence can be avoided. Remember where thorns are found and this could mean that a goal can be obtained easily and without interference. Reaching the rose might be worth getting past the thorns.

Othila symbolizes the homeland and represents stability and safety stemming from inheritance, both material and genetic. In this position in the reading and with respect to the question asked, it speaks to considering the background of the people and families involved.

Eihwaz refers to the yew tree, which is evergreen and bends but does not break. It symbolizes endurance, strength and flexibility. Because of its representation of evergreen, it speaks to issues where death is not the end but only the doorway to a new beginning, of things that are eternal and unchanging such as issues of the spirit.

Nauthiz represents many things, most of them unpleasant, and so carries strong warnings to pay attention and heed it well. Constraint, delay, loss, need, and sorrow are all frequently seen in this rune. It speaks most strongly of pause and often foretells a delay in the effect of other runes that it accompanies.
