Facts on Dieting

If you are a little heavier than you want to be, do not feel alone. One-third of American women and one-quarter of American men are trying to get rid of that extra weight. The problem is, while many lose weight, if you talk with some five years later, you find they have probably gained it all back.

When you start to put on those extra pounds it is natural to want to eat less. You may skip lunch, eat very little for dinner, and pray that your body will burn off its excess fat. There are a lot of diets that are based on the theory, overweight people get that way from overeating. The answer must be to cut back on the food intake. This is simply not true in most cases.

Nature fights diets. The body took shape millions of years ago, at that time there were no diets. The only low-calorie diet/food intake in people's life was starvation. Those who could cope with a temporary lack of food were the ones who survived. Even today, our bodies have built-in mechanisms to survive in the face of low food intake.

When you start a low-calorie diet, you know that you are trying to lose weight. As far as your body is concerned, you must be starving. Biological mechanisms automatically kick in to counter starvation. First, your metabolism slows down. Next, your body gets set to binge on the first available food.

The trick is to go on the right diet, and not think starving or eating less will help you loose weight. There are many diets on the market today, what you need to do is find the one that will work for you. You will want to keep in mind, not only to diet but also start a fitness program. Take a walk, run up and down the stairs a few times. In the long run you will feel better and have more energy.

I found these web sites to be a great resource for finding diets for many different people.
