letts.gif - 33466 Bytes In response to the post written by JaKil, entitled, "Perhaps we are what we are because we have no choice?" I wrote the post included below. I decided to send this post to the Gorean Voice instead of hitting the "Post It!" button, because I think that the GPB is a great place to discuss the ideas that come out in the Gorean Voice. Those are the roles, as I see them.

I am about to find out what the editor thinks :)

I do think the piece would make a good starting point for a discussion on

Law Abiding Goreans.

It seems that some people have the impression that Goreans do whatever they want regardless of what the laws of their society say. They seem to have fogotten that these laws are codes. A Gorean male not only does the "right thing," he does it by his codes.

You can't make a man Gorean, but you can show him how to be one.
The question is, "Should you?"
------------------------------------------------------------------ Tal JaKil,
Perhaps it is that all men are Warriors? Certainly among some Gorean cultures, all men are expected to become them.

It may well be, I think, that as a group of people "settle down" men are needed in other roles. Of course, it may just be this very "settling down" which gave mankind the opportunity to develop advanced technology.

It may be, that such a diversion from our basic nature, if indeed it is one, would ultimately lead us to a "modern society" much like the one we live in today. Is "modern society" really such a bad way of life?

No, I do not think that the lifestyle itself is a bad thing. But I do think that people are not challenged. They have detailed laws to tell them what is right and what is wrong. They do not need to decide for themselves, and possibly fight for it. These laws, are becoming more and more detailed, reaching into more and more of our daily lives.

The law has become the blanket under which most people sleep.

Do not get me wrong though. Society could not function properly without both codes, and a way to uphold them. As the population grows, it would seem reasonable too, that the detail of the codes would also increase. After all, fairness is critical to any governing body.

So here we stand.

I wish you well!
Yurial.
