Glimpses Into the Tuchuk Haruspex
Welcome, Friend - sit down beside me here in the thick grass and let us talk awhile. I see you are curious about the pouch I wear round my waist. Let me open it and show you the contents. Inside it are my set of tarot cards, a set of handmade rune cards as well as a set of wooden runes also made by hand, and a piece of cloth on which I lay out the cards or runes to do a reading on.
In using either the runes or tarot for divination, the guiding principle of either one is that such methods are like playing a game of chess - the future is not set but it is shaped by our past and the events that happened and are being put into place.
Before using or learning the runes, it is traditional to undergo a twenty-four day series of meditations, one day for every individual rune symbol. Each day begins with eating a cookie for breakfast etched with one of the runes. It is helpful then to make your own set of rune cards, and later a set of handmade runes either of wood or stone (or make a more traditional set of nine rune sticks, cut from birch or rowan trees, which can be thrown into patterns which are then interpreted and read), and meditate on the day’s selected rune and its shape and meanings.
Runes can have many meanings or correspondences - the letters or symbols represent ideas, hours of the day, certain numbers or the Nordic zodiac. When either casting runes or laying out tarot cards for readings, it is very important to be in the right frame of mind and in conducive, receptive circumstances - emotionally and the physical space used must reflect calm and be peaceful with no outside interferences. Between times when I am not called on to do rune readings, perhaps you and I can speak more about the runes, their meanings and how they can be used.
