A monthly on-line magazine for fans and lifestylers of
John Norman’s GOR

Deadline for the April 2006 issue is March 24, 2006

The Gorean Voice Writers Guidelines

The Gorean Voice is a monthly electronic magazine which publishes articles and artwork pertaining to the fandom and lifestyle community that enjoys John Norman’s Gor novels.

We Seek:

Articles discussing matters arising from the fiction of John Norman’s Gor saga. This includes but is not limited to histories, events and personalities in the novels. Intelligently researched articles on flora, fauna, weapons, technology and the like will be viewed favorably. Postulations on the later directions of the characters of the books, and discussions of their past adventures is also encouraged. Articles attempting to debate the validity of the philosophy expressed in the books will be viewed with a more critical eye, but this does not exclude them from publication. Consider your audience as already having accepted the Gorean philosophy, whether it be in their lives or simply as a matter of fiction, and write with an eye toward that. Humor is an asset in the road to being published in The Gorean Voice.
Articles discussing the Gorean lifestyle as it pertains to this society. This includes but is not limited to discussions of the reality of male/female, Free Person/slave and Free companion relationships in the modern world. Articles on honor, integrity, physics and meta-physics of the Gorean philosophy and the codes are also encouraged, as are those that discuss the traditions, and how they are applied to the everyday lives of those who see themselves as Gorean in this society. Articles concerning the on-line communities will be given a very critical eye and would have to break the mold of the "he said/she said" business we have all grown tired of. Articles attempting to debate the validity of the Gorean lifestyle choice are not discouraged, but writers are reminded to consider their audience to improve their chances of being published. Humor is an asset in the road to being published in The Gorean Voice.

Columnists

We seek a small number of regular columnists to speak on a variety of issues pertaining to Gor fandom and lifestyle issues. Pitch the editor with a good idea for a regular column.

Style

Writers should not use lazy, grammatically incorrect A/all, Y/you, CAPS/smalls conventions common to BDSM literature, and kajirae/kajiri should be mindful of their station and therefore speak in the third person when referring to themselves. Within those spelling and self-reference boundaries, writers may employ their styles of choice. The editor determines the final form of all submissions. Some items are published as written, and some are published with minor changes. The sooner a piece is submitted the more interactive an editorial process can be.

Short Fiction

Once it became clear that John Norman does not want anyone writing fan fiction based on his novels, characters, or plots, The Gorean Voice stopped publishing such fan fiction. We respect the author’s wishes concerning his intellectual property. Please refer to http://http://www.writersu.net/?link=authpolicy&id=96 and to the discussions on this topic that appear online from time to time.

Departments

These include, but are not limited to such things as philosophy, lifestyle, dance, music, fashion, politics, gatherings, puzzles/trivia and humor. These can be of any length, and if popular, have a good chance of becoming a regular feature in the magazine. If you’ve seen the latest issues you can see we’ve had wonderful new articles on weapons and geography. Feel free to pitch the editor any new idea you have.

Poetry

Like short fiction above, we think the magazine will be a wonderful place to showcase the talents of those interested in verse. Requirements are simple: the poem must concern some facet of the Gorean experience; lifestyle, novels or fandom. It must be of readable length, and it must be signed by the author, although a pseudonym may be used for publication.

Art

We accept submissions for publication any ORIGINAL artwork that pertains to the Gorean genre. All of the art has to be in either .jpg or .gif format, or formatable to those.

We do NOT seek:

Articles dealing primarily with the on-line communities that are of the “he said/she said” variety we have seen in the past. Any fiction involving children or underage protagonists. Romance tales of the “ripping bodice” variety. Fiction in which the entire point of the story seems to be that a girl kneels at a man’s feet.

General Information:

We do not accept reprints from other publications.

All text submissions should be sent in either plain .txt format (preferred) or M$ Word, RTF, or HTML. All artwork should be submitted in .gif, .jpg, or .tif format, or another format that can be converted to one of those.

The Gorean Voice cannot be responsible for submissions lost or misdirected. If your submission is rejected, it will be returned to you via Email as soon as possible with no copies or files maintained by the magazine. If your submission is accepted, you will be notified of that fact and tentatively in which issue it will appear, by Email. Please allow at least 2 weeks before querying.

At this time, The Gorean Voice is a non-paying market.

By submitting any work, you transfer to The Gorean Voice first magazine rights. After publication, all rights revert back to the authors.

Good Luck!

All submissions must be double-spaced and submitted via Email to: email us    gorean_voice@hotmail.com
