Musings of the Editor

Hersius Speaks

Tal and welcome to the 69th issue of The Gorean Voice.

BennKar has devoted significant service to the Gorean community as Editor of The Gorean Voice. It speaks highly of a person when it takes two people to replace him, and I think it speaks even more highly of BennKar that one of those people that it takes to replace him happens to be himself. I have become the Editor-in-Chief, but BennKar has graciously agreed to keep helping as Technical Editor and patiently work with me as I become adept at working with the technical set-up that produces The Gorean Voice each month. You all know that BennKar has excellent producer qualities, and I can add from personal experience that he is a good teacher as well. The phased transition of the editorship will insure the continuity of quality that readers have a right to expect.

As you all know from her February column, lissa has discovered that in the ongoing journey of self-realization, she needs a time of quiet reflection. It is wise to recognize when it is time to listen. We each have a duty to ourselves to make the changes needed for our ongoing personal development. Her voice here will be missed as she moves from writer to reader, and we hope that the time will again be right when her thoughts will be shared here.

In this issue, Socrates concludes his booknotes for Slave Girl of Gor. Kittiara speaks of transitions involving free women. We welcome back kaylee, who managed the Cooking department from December 2001 through May 2003, as she assumes the Slaveheart department and shares thoughts regarding the meaning of surrender. In the Geography department, Xerxex offers amazing pictures of The Barrens to complement our text, and as an added treat in the Addendum section, the Xerxex map of the southern plains sets new standards for Gor map technological achievement. All work by Xerxex is, of course, previously unpublished, and The Gorean Voice is proud to unveil the photographic quality pictures and the professional quality maps. The bar for Gor maps in terms of faithfulness to the Books and sophistication of presentation has just been raised.

Life is a foot trek. In the books, even with ships and wagons and tarns and kaiila and tharlarion and Priest-King technology, Tarl Cabot sooner or later found himself walking. Mountains, desert, glacier, plains, it made no matter, he would end up hoofing it at some point. He covered an amazing amount of ground, one step at a time. One can visualize the end of a journey, but one must still take it, bit by bit, decision by decision. Setbacks, periods of inactivity, reinventions of self over time, these are all part of the foot trek that every one of us takes. Our goal is to make a difference. The details of that goal change with time, but that theme is a constant in life. One step at a time, act to make a positive difference. Perhaps some of the footprints that you will leave will be found within the pages of The Gorean Voice. Whether it be for a short season or a long season, perhaps you will trek here as you make positive differences in the world.

We have much to look forward to. After taking this month off, kessia{Sage} returns with more healthy eating advice, kitchen and cooking wisdom, and recipes that actually work. So, watch for more of her practicality and humor in the Recipes department. In addition, prism is taking a needed month off and should be returning next month as well. In future issues we can all anticipate contributions by Nyre, who returns this time to the Philosophy department. Nyre managed or contributed to the Free Woman department from November 1998 through October 2001, comanaged the Debate department from December 1999 through January 2001, and has contributed to the Feature, Guest, and Poetry departments as well. We will also be enjoying an innovation in the Slaveheart department. We will welcome the return of (in her current name) leslie to join kaylee. kaylee and leslie will creatively manage the Slave Heart department from the perspectives of being owned and un-owned. leslie made Puzzles and contributed to the Cooking department in 1999 and 2000 and has contributed to the Lifestyle and Slave Heart departments as well.
