Why Gor? By Kittiara
Tal and greetings all, First off, before launching into another one of my writings, I would like to wish all a rather belated happy 2004. I hope everyone’s holidays have been filled with joy and laughter and that this year brings you all you wish for, and more. Due to health reasons I was unable to wish you all this a bit earlier, but there you go. Also I would like to thank everyone that has sent me comments on my articles in the past year, or that came to me to ask questions. I enjoy this; it is inspiring and helps me to think of new articles, so please do feel free to contact me. This month I will write a little about a question that has been asked me by a few people: why Gor? Or more precisely, why would any woman with a good set of brains and some common sense wish to live the Gorean lifestyle, either crawling at the feet of men or at the very least risk her neck be slammed into steel and end up in aforementioned situation. I shall refrain from my analysis on the state of today’s society which is really rather saddening when you look at it objectively, though some of the answers may indeed rest within the way the world is this day and age. However we all know what the world is like, so I do not need depress you with all that. Lets suffice with the fact that life can be full of confusion, danger, a lack of stability and not knowing where is ones place in this picture. Talking to many a female slave has led me to believe that part of what brings them to the feet and steel of a man is a need to know her place, know she is safe and protected by someone that is strong, and will look after her. Of course, too, a big factor there is the need of a slave to serve, to please, a certain fire within and a spirit that need surrender. So why then would a free woman set foot in this lifestyle? Do we wish end up as such? Well no, some of us maybe, but as I stated in previous articles, certainly not all of us. Despite the Gorean books being a set of sci fi novels, the large majority of which were written decades ago when the world was different, as it is ever changing, the lifestyle that has sprouted from it is a rather intriguing one. I can only answer for myself here, but I see beauty within its harshness. You see I have always had a soft spot for medieval times, the days of knights, honour, integrity, where women could be women and men were men. I strongly feel that each must live their lives based upon what is within them, guided by their sense of what is right and what is wrong. This is often near impossible as modern society has set its own judgmental rules, and that guides common view, rather than people’s own instincts. Mind you I am not saying, go pillage, steal, harm others, and kill, if that’s what you feel you should do. I simply mean that it is hard to be ourselves, most of the time, and this can be suffocating. Women are commonly seen as all feminists, striving to be equal to men, pursuing career rather than love, must be harsh to make it in business. Often women juggle with jobs, marriage, kids, studies and housework, to name but a few things. This may make some of us happy, but others wish for a rather different life. A woman on Gor can have a career; they need not go to the other extreme of sitting behind the geraniums watching soap operas. If there are geraniums on Gor….and of course there is a distinct lack of soap operas. The Gorean free woman is not scorned for her intelligence nor seen as any less feminine for this, and for her duties. She knows her place in life, knows about respect, and knows that underneath her robes she is indeed a woman, soft and feminine. She knows about honour, something that has got lost along the way between Earth’s medieval times and today, and about integrity, and honesty. She knows where she stands with Gorean men, and though yes, there is the risk of stumbling into his steel, she knows a man lives by his codes, and will too fight to defend her home. She is not expected to compete with men to be seen as a worthy individual, belie the strength of her physical frame, become a pseudo male to be valued. She is a woman, and is happy to be so. But we do not live on Gor, do we? No we do not, nor is Gor perfect, I don’t think any place is. Yet in the online realms we can express ourselves, be ourselves, share what has touched us when reading the books, because obviously we identify with these writings, or parts of it, or the general feel and morals. And when meeting other Gorean lifestylers real life we can come close as we might, within the reason of safety, sanity, and consentuality. And if you have ever met other Gorean lifestylers in “real life”, you will know what I mean with saying, that from the moment you meet them its extremely easy to get along with them. Like you have known them for ages and can just relax and be yourselves and have a good laugh and a great time. It’s one of the beautiful things about Gor. And a great reason to be part of it.
I wish you well, Kittiara PS I welcome any comments on my writings, or any ideas or suggestions for future articles. Simply email me at |
