A Tarn’s Eye View

Tal! Welcome to the 76th issue of The Gorean Voice.

In this Issue

The Art department features Vanion as he shows Acquiescence followed by a Moment of Peace.

In the Booknotes department, Socrates continues Explorers of Gor as Tarl ventures deep into the interior of the rainforests, both pursuing and being pursued.

Mishel’s brilliant Crossword Puzzles continue to intrigue our readership, this month continuing Explorers of Gor.

The Turian Gardener returns in the Pleasure Gardens department in time to talk about Winterizing Watering.

In the Health department, prism provides important information and links for Breast Cancer Awareness.

kaylee{G} again helps with cogent insights in the Slave Heart department, this month tackling the phenomenon of burnout in her article, Running on Empty.

The Poetry department offers two unusual pieces. The first is a simple rhyme to parallel interest in the Booknotes department. The second is a brief essay on Norman’s Commentaries on Poets.

A Maps and Scenic Images section has been added so that the maps and scenic illustrations developed by Xerxex can be collected into one locale. This will make the body of work more useful to Norman’s readership, especially as the map comes online section by section.

Meditation: Affirmations

From time to time, discussions can be found online as to whether or not “Gor,” undefined, is BDSM or DS or fetish or some other thing. These discussions miss the point in trying to classify Gorean lifestyle, philosophy, imagery, etc. into some lifestyle of limited focus, especially when the question limits itself to eroticism. Norman’s writings are not kink manuals, nor are they reducible to erotic manifestos. Gorean perspectives encompass the whole of life. It is not strange that many find passages in Norman’s writings that resonate with something inside, but it is a pity that many grab at some example without seeing the truths that the various examples intend to affirm.

In the same vein, epistles regarding “Natural Order” philosophy using Norman’s writings for proof texts often limit their subject matter to male-female relationships. Norman’s writings affirm far more than relationships between individuals. Norman’s proclamations, whether expressed as critique, satire, or bold pronouncement, address a multitude of social concerns and are equally legitimately identified with interpersonal societal matters and the relationship of humanity to the whole of the organic and inorganic ecosystem.

Norman affirms mankind as part of nature and as a social creature. He affirms responsibility in conservation and technical development, in social sharing and individual self-realization, and in all aspects of human inter-relationships, whether as friend or foe. Not to show my age, but “Gor” is not classifiable into someone’s “trip.” “Gor” is unique. “Gor” is far vaster than anyone’s attempt to reduce it, label it, and limit it.

Norman’s work is affirmation writ large, and it is an affirmation of life in all its aspects. Any particular passage may or may not itself seem distinctive to the casual reader, but the whole view taken together is distinctive. Gorean perspectives are beyond reductionist pigeon-holing and are worthy in and of themselves of serious study in their many affirmations of humanity.

The Gorean Voice is a place where Gorean distinctives, in all their complexity, can be affirmed. Consider whether you have an affirmation that should be shared here.

Watch for This

The Free Woman, Reviews, Geography, and Kajira Korner, departments will return, and the Interviews department will be making its reappearance.

Because there are always proposed contributions in progress, The Gorean Voice is preparing other really nice surprises for you as well.

Possibilities for Contributors

There are many possibilities for contributors. If any of these departments appeals to you as a place where you might find a writing or other artistic niche, and of course, if you have ideas for a new feature and are willing to help, then read the guidelines for authors and let us know! Although some possibilities are more appropriate for one person to manage over time, many departments benefit from many contributors. Even if you are thinking about contributing only once, say, through Gorean humor or a book review or perhaps a poem, you should still contact me.
